Dandy sounding pressing. Dynamic, quiet, and punchy. Another peachy release from Mofi.

Most twoscore years agone on a beautiful fall afternoon, an afternoon just like this one, the James Gang rode into my life. And so equally my hand moved across my vinyl this morning, there must have been some sort of genetic musical memory that caused me to stop right here ... and I tell y'all true, I tin can almost odour 1970 and the ragtop of my MGB warming in the lord's day, while images of Halloween rushed by me as I headed out of town in search of open up backroads.

This is the album for which most people remember the James Gang, and that'due south a shame because their other releases offer a multifariousness of really great fabric, though all in all, this is their knock'em dead release. The tape opens with "Funk 49," reminiscent of their initial offerings, and while they draw securely from those first offerings, James Gang footstep out lightyears from that point in their career, especially with this 2d album coming so quickly on the heals of their first. This was a stunning record, ane that picked up right where Todd Rundgren left off, layered and mixed from psychedelic lessons learned from The Beatles Magical Mystery Tour and of course from Led Zeppelin 2 and their heavy blues influences. Impossible to exist missed is the dimensional body and weight of Dale Peters' probing low-stop bass lines that resonate the floorboards. Add to that an injection an undertone of funk that fifty-fifty Sly Stone would have been proud of, paved the manner for nearly every aspect of the stoner rock genre, influencing Aerosmith and countless others, and while in concert ... may accept been THE greatest jam band afterward The Grateful Expressionless.

Information technology was truly a time of experimentation with the James Gang blending everything from Rock to Funk with the sweetness strings of violins, bass, cellos, and tiny textured tappings of the piano's white keys. "Tend My Garden" is every bit every bit trippy as the song "Collage" from the Yer Album release, and equally as moving. Simply don't become thinking they've gone soft, "Woman" rocks your back teeth as well equally anything you will ever come across. I simply don't observe much to complain about with this tape as the production is outstanding, at that place's nothing sloppy with the playing by whatsoever of the band members and when that guitar selection slides down the strings I'm left to wonder if they knew they had but developed a signature marking. One of the things that makes this record so great is that James Gang seem to concord back only enough, leaving y'all waiting for them to push through hard, as nigh bands from this era did ... however they don't, they hold you correct on the edge with marvelous chord changes and outstanding numbers that will have you hitting the echo push button more than than once.

James Gang became known as the stoner's ring and I must agree that that brand is well deserved and is stamped deeply into the brains of nearly of us from the day. Information technology's a perfect Oct afternoon out there, put the tiptop down, let the wind accident through your hair as James Gang takes yous rollin'.

"Wow man [cough cough], I dig this band the about."

A side annotation: I'thou certain that fans accept stumbled upon the issue regarding the censored versions of Rides Again, with the abbreviated story going something similar this this: All original first edition versions of this album contain a suite at the terminate of side one entitled "The Bomber." But the original get-go pressings of the album contain this three office suite, as shown in the track list accompanying this entry, which includes a ane:25 minute segment titled "Bolero," suggesting a full running time for the suite of 7:04 minutes.

John Revell's estate threatened legal action for the non-authorized utilize of "Bolero" when the offset records hit the shop shelves. Therefore, the powers that exist, rather than fighting or paying, removed "Bolero" from all time to come pressings, shortening the suite to 5:46 minutes. That being said, ABC Records apparently was not able to get new disc labels printed in time to comply for the second edition, the censored pressings, many copies were issued with the original spindle label listing "Bolero," even though it was edited out for those copies. So, simply because you find a copy with "Bolero" printed on the characterization does non guarantee that it is present.

Now, as to the Mobile High Fidelity vinyl pressing, I can assure you that the full original album has been reissued with brilliant sound quality. The thing was settled with the manor of John Revell, with the estate coming to realize that free publicity is better than royalties sometimes, every bit fans of Rides Over again were actively seeking out and paying for copies.

*** The Fun Facts: There was no 1 in the band named James, the name was taken from the infamous wild w outlaw outfit, The James Gang.

Walsh used something here called an Echoplex equipped slide guitar, its furnishings and responses are firsthand, and while I've never seen one upwardly close and personal, it's a dream I cherish.

As to the cover photograph, to which Joe Walsh says, "I recall the encompass shoot for Rides Again fondly. We'd absolutely no comprehend budget whatsoever, but our road manager, Tom Wright, was a fine photographer. Nosotros were on the road, playing this small club in western Massachusetts. In those days, we had no money for hotels either, so we were staying with a band nosotros met in Cleveland. They had a huge house they shared with a motorcycle gang, and nosotros were welcome there. I morning, Tom was in the mood to accept some photos and he kept eyeing those beautiful bikes. But information technology was Jan, and nosotros were all hesitant to inquire the bikers if we could take their bikes out into a human foot of snow. Tom finally asked and they were extremely excited to exist a function of the shoot, though they could have just been high from the night earlier. Nosotros were blown abroad when they started the bikes correct in that location in the living room and rode them right off the front porch into the snow. To this mean solar day, I dearest that photo!"

More than sad, on the 25th of June 2019, information technology was revealed that all of the James Gangs master recordings were destroyed in the 2008 Universal Studio burn, along with hundreds of other impressive artists.

Excellent underrated forgotten album. This record perhaps gets lost because there were a lot of rock groups in the '70s that had their radio hitting and not much else. James Gang Rides over again starts off with the archetype "Funk #49" that everyone has heard on the radio and in numerous soundtracks to tv/movies but information technology keeps going with many strong songs afterwards. The music is varied and shows a range of talents. Of class Joe Walsh is the biggest name from the group and he went onto feel solo fame. On this album he is the principle song writer and really shows here how diverse and complex his song craft was. He goes from difficult rockers to thoughtful ballads. Its to bad many accept not heard these great tunes past "Funk #49." Do yourself a favor and option it upwards on vinyl, y'all will wonder where this album was your whole life.
